Journeys - small and big ones

Jeż JerzyMichał Batkiewicz is a well-known sculptor whose solemn and grand, primarily religious monuments, e.g. those to Pope John Paul II, have been erected throughout the world, including Europe, USA and Argentina. Nevertheless, ha has recently started to carve small and garden sculptures, which can also be used for furnishing home interiors.

Michał Batkiewicz uses varied mediums in harmony and with exclusivity, to contrast and compliment but never in conflict. Stones and rocks from his native Nowy Targ mountain region, the noble metals of cast bronze, and the gentle textures of noble woods. Focusing on topics rarely found in contemporary art, the artist is inspired by unlimited imagination and freely takes advantage of classic and contemporary sculpting materials, expressing fairytales with a moral of his own interpretation.

His sculptures presented in the catalog are funny, close to nature, close to the world of animals, with quotes from fairy tales. The artist illustrates the Child’s World which like the animal world, is a primeval one and innocent. Figures of dragons and   paradoxes like the mouse on the cat, liberating our imagination with extraordinary ease. Perhaps the yearning for the Paradise of childhood or perhaps the mature awareness that if we cannot become children at some times, we can miss the happiness of innocence.

Bronze and stone

His sculptures have a lot of realistic elements, such as a dog whose head is a faithful cast of the artist’s favorite dog. However he wears the cap pertly like a dog "Ferdynand Wspaniały" (out of L. J. Kern stories, the Polish writer), and the whole statue is based on the sculptor’s feet!

In an innocent way the artist shows his thoughts symbolically; he shows his philosophy, he seems to say: Man, consider from where you are coming and where you are going to!  Follow the animals’ example, look at them - they are clear and true; it’s great they are – they listen to you and love you. Do not overestimate yourself, do not exaggerate! Be joyful, be like a child! Believe, trust and be close to nature! Be yourself and do not pretend! You are part of the universe with your  imagination and intuition, with your dreams and experience. You have the right to be here.

It’s good for you to see such a sculpture and to settle your gaze on it and then take it to your own world as a cure for sadness.
